earthquakes Instead we built a garage but couldn t afford the septic tank and plumbing I have been using this solution for over a year now while living in the garage We have just received approval back to proceed with building a septic tank and will look at adding a conventional bathroom on to our garage until we are able to build I will be happy to have a flushing toilet for our guests who might be uncomfortable with our unusual toilet arrangements but during fine weather I still plan to use our outhouse and compost the waste The trees that are closer to our shed and receive most of the diluted pee are doing fabulously and are clearly love the extra nutrients they receive Thank you heaps for sharing your knowledge with us and creating this site Also happy to demonstrate the system to anyone passing through Birdlings Flat We live in an environmentally sensitive area and using wheelie bins to compost the solids helps protectour lakes from further pollution Despite the unpleasantries of emptying the buckets I believe that this system is more sustainable for our local conditions Reply Katie Kinstedt says February 10 2012 at 11 45 am Hello all Great work I am doing a project about the application of ecological sanitation in disaster relief at the Technically University of Hamburg in Germany I am interested in the design you have presented on this website for Christchurch and I was wondering if you have any statistics on how many households have implemented this design as an alternative to the chemical toilets provided in the relief effort Also do you have any feedback about whether you believe this approach could replace the chemical toilets provided for emergency assistance in the future Thanks in advance for your help
