    from the CPIT Foundation Christchurch City Council and the Society for Disability Studies we were able to allow Glen Burrows Ben Morris and Isaac Tait to perform at the Society for Disability Studies Conference in San Jose California This was a great experience for all concerned and a great success In October we were pleased to collaborate with Free Theatre Christchurch TV chef Richard Till and Richard Gough from the Centre for Performance Research in Wales on The Earthquake in Chile presented in and around St Mary s Church in Addington This gave the performers the chance to work more collaboratively and to explore site specific performance in the wider community Some ongoing projects have had to be put on hold this year a tour of Christchurch secondary schools and the further development of the weekend course at CPIT into a more extensive full time course with a meaningful qualification For 2012 though we have received invitations to performance festivals Ludus Festival Leeds at PSi and Denver SDS and the offer of a cultural exchange with Mind the Gap Theatre Company in Bradford We are currently seeking funding to allow us to accept these invitations Downstage Theatre in Wellington are

    last group rehearsal before Ben Glen and Isaac leave for the Ludus Festival in Leeds UK Radio New Zealand National Interview 17th June 2012 Click on the player below to listen to the interview broadcast 17th June 2012 on Radio new Zealand National One in Five One in Five meets A Different Light a mixed ability theatre company who leave for England this week to show their latest production at a contemporary performing arts festival The show Still Lives was written and developed by the Christchurch actors and is based upon their own experiences of living with a disability The company has won Creative New Zealand funding to take the show to the Ludus Festival in Leeds A Different Light has been working together for eight years and last year performed the Society for Disability Studies Conference in San Jose California The company s director Tony McCaffrey says by allowing the actors the time to express themselves they are developing new voices and writing their own material He says A Different Light has also been invited to make a keynote presentation performance of its new soap opera The Lonely and the Lovely at an Arts Access Australia Conference in Sydney in October Katy Gosset dropped in on the actors during one of their final rehearsals Sunday 27th May 2012 Ben Glen and Isaac work on Still Lives while everyone else prepares scenes for the soap opera Sunday 20th May 2012 Workshopping ideas and new scenes for the soap Sunday 13th May 2012 Isaac provides live animation for a scene from Still Lives Sunday 6th May 2012 Trisha from IHC came in to do some interviews whilst rehearsals continued in the background Wednesday 18th April 2012 Katy Gosset interviewed Ben Morris Isaac Tait and Tony McCaffrey for the Radio New Zealand

    excited by the potential offered by technology for example to performers with disorders on the autistic spectrum He is planning a paper next year on assistive technologies He is lobbying for meaningful involvement of people with disabilities within the faculty of creative industries We have NASDA the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art Circus Arts Jazz School Art and Design Broadcasting My vision would be that we get people categorised as having disabilities more involved and we use the graduates and undergraduates from those programmes to work with them There are huge learning opportunities both ways Tony is also trying to organise a tour by performers with disabilities to go round primary schools because that is where a lot of the attitudes start A core group of performers has been with A Different Light for its first six years I would say the main development of the group has been letting the people themselves in more and more to have control and ownership of what is created There has been a growth in confidence in the feeling that they have something to say that people will listen to You scratch the surface with every performance It is phenomenal And what of Tony s vision for next six years I d like to have a centre for diversity in performance in the arts here in Christchurch I d like to see festivals and conferences of disability performance We ve got a supportive city council and having a flat city makes it quite accessible We have the opportunity to be at the forefront of this work Different light cast on the world of Oz 7 May 2010 The Different Light Theatre Company will live up to its name with performers casting a different light on the classic Wizard of Oz narrative during this month s UC arts festival Platform The mixed ability theatre group will be presenting a double bill of performance In the first half of the evening they will perform The Poor Dears a re working of a show that premiered at the 2009 Body Festival This will be followed by scenes from a work in progress the company s particular spin on The Wizard of Oz Director Tony McCaffrey currently studying towards his PhD in the Theatre and Film Studies Department of University of Canterbury started Different Light Theatre Company six years ago In the early days of the group students and other abled performers took to the stage along with disabled performers but in the company s last two productions Frankenstein s Children and The Poor Dears the entire cast has been comprised of performers categorized as disabled who have been active in collaborating on the script and incorporating something of their experience into the performance In The Poor Dears the concept of the identity of the performers is explored through performance The title The Poor Dears came from one of the company s members who didn t like being a called a poor dear a term
