  • The gastronomic delights of the Tarawera Ultra Marathon - food, nutrition and recipes from an ultra endurance junkie
spends weeks passionately creating home made muesli bars in mini cupcake cases and storing them in everyone s freezers until the night before the race Aid station 2 is at Okaraka It has become tradition here that the volunteers dress as Santa There is a bit of a party atmosphere here as it is at the relay changeover point 1 more cup of Heed and 3 more Heather bars and I am on my way My calf starts playing up here so unfortunately it is the start of the Ibuprophen for me to help numb the pain Within a very short distance we get to the Miller road aid station This is the start of the long section over the hill towards Okataina The volunteers here are dressed as bumble bees in yellow and black Yes more Heed Yes more heather bars and a few for the road to keep me going Alan from Photos4Sale catches my mid aid station raid At some point over the hill I end up reaching for one of my emergency gels This is enough to get me down to the Okataina aid station at the 38km mark This is run by the Hamilton Hawkes in their bright blue shirts This is the start of the bees They were all hovering around They make my nervous as I was stung in 2012 and ended up with a week off work due to an infection in my leg I managed to escape unscathed following more heather bars and heed The bees buzz around for the next 20km but I manage to avoid them The aid station at Humphrey s bay is always a party Tropical Hawaiian theme everyone is dressed up in so much colour it puts Ross Steele to shame The volunteers here have arrived by boat as it is more remote than the others I m starting to feel the effects of lots of water drinking and sweating so I have an enduralyte salt tablet here More heather bars and heed and I m back on the trail Onwards to the Tarawera outlet and to the next aid station Huge thanks to the Kawerau Harriers for supporting us here It has become tradition that I seem to go through this section with Chris from Running Calendar here 3 years now Pizza and Coke was on the menu here and he followed my sound nutritional advice to get him through the next section Did I mention more heather bars For me this year the race drew to a close at the 60k finish line It was bitter sweet I have wanted this collection of medals for many years now I am so stoked to have finally done this It was however difficult watching everyone going on while I stopped Huge thanks to Iron chick Margo who religiously drives up from Wellington to work the microphone at many of the Rotorua events and welcomes us all home A special mention to my ultra trail fairy god
