say whether you agree or disagree or sit on the fence with whatever rule or policy you are giving your opinion on This gives the Council clear guidance about your thoughts Why Give Council your reasoning or tell them why you think a rule or part of the document they want submissions on should be changed People are more likely to agree with you if they know why they should agree with you Say what you want Its great to give your thoughts but you should also say what action you want the Council to take For example you may think that a rule that requires buildings to be built 5m away from the boundary of a property is too far Tell Council why you think 5m is too far Then say what you want them to do such as Change 5m to 3m Be specific Some documents that Council ask for submissions on are very large Most district plans are over 400 pages You need to say what part of the plan you are making a submission on Include the rule number if you can When you are reading a lot of submissions it really helps Be on time Try to send your submission to Council by the date stated Council have legal deadlines they have to work to so can t always accept submissions that are late Don t be mean I have read submissions that criticize council staff include swear words are mean about different groups in the community or racist It s so awful to have to read stuff like that and it doesn t help anyone Be positive this is your chance to make a difference If your tone is positive people are likely to relate better to you and what you are saying Things

their plans Why would you want to Well here are a few reasons 1 its easy you just have to fill out a form or write down your thoughts you can even do it anonymously Not one with words then you can go and speak to Council when they meet to talk about the district plan In most cases you can email your submission 2 The rules affect you you are the only person that can make sure your interests are taken into account The rules in the district plan affect your property They affect your business It s the district plan that determines whether you need a resource consent permission from council to build a garden shed or operate a business from your home It s the district plan that says whether you can subdivide your section and how close your neighbours can build their house to yours Even if you don t own property the district plan still affects you It has rules about where businesses can locate It has rules about how much noise you can make when you have a party It also has more subtle impacts like influencing how much houses cost and how big the city can grow 3 Get what you want if you have your say you re more likely to see the kind of development that you want in your community Council considers peoples submissions and then they may decide to change some of the rules based on what people have told them 4 Stop Complaining If you have your say you are less likely to have to complain later 5 Its free making a submission yourself is free except for your time 6 Someone else can help you with it You can ask a planning consultant to help you make
