    is at this point the anchor could snap and fail Our testing has proved this time and again when we have tested using any steel with tensile properties Types of steel tested Mild Steel Black Bar 250 grade Mild steel with Galvanized coating Mild steel with Zinc coating Tensile steel 4 4 and 8 8 Construction Quality Bar better known as CQ Elasticity Mild Steel has the ability to maintain it s elasticity after being bent a number of times until it reaches it s maxim yield and this makes it safe as an anchorage point for Fall Arrest or Abseil Mild Steel Is a low grade mild steel and has been used because it is not brittle this grade of steel bends gradually as loads are imposed on the Anchor We noted during the testing process that tensile steel had a tendency to fracture and snap at lower loading capacities Mild steel offers more elasticity than tensile steel under loading When a secondary loading has been applied all tensile steel tested snapped with out warning Mild steel is the most commonly used ferrous metal It contains about 0 15 to 0 30 carbon and the rest is iron As mild steel has a low carbon content it cannot be hardened and tempered however it is malleable and ductile and bends easily It is used in the manufacture of nuts screws bolts girders and other general metal products Tensile Steel Tensile Steel has limited elastic properties when tensile steel is stressed up to it s elastic limit it then changes from elastic to plastic this makes the steel much more brittle and the steel can snap without warning This can be a hazard to the user Our research also showed the use of tensile steel in cold temperatures can cause the steel to snap at a lower yield without warning NB Tensile steel should only be used in shear loading and not stress loading Bending Bending of the anchor due to significant loading is a safety feature that will alert any prospective user that the Anchor has been damaged and should be replaced before anybody attempts to use it Bending may occur if the Anchor is used for some purpose other than fall prevention or fall arrest It is amazing what Anchors have been used for in some situations Manufacturing 1 All products are manufactured to a high standard 2 Safetor products are manufactured using mild steel 3 Will deform gradually when loads are imposed on them 4 Have ease of adjustment for installation to different size structural members 5 Provide for immediate visual signs of having had a load imposed on them Collins Corporation believes that these features are very important aspects for consideration when choosing which type of Anchor Device to install in any building or structure We still engage the services of a Telarc registered Material Testing Laboratory to ensure that compliance continues with the Australian and New Zealand Standards Powdercoating Kulorthene Series Abcite Abcite is a

    of unsafe height safety anchor installations observed by a number of members in the commercial and industrial workplace Read the Fall Crisis Report Survey Report posted on their website see link below report s Anchors in New Zealand I believe the issues in New Zealand is far worse than that of Australia because the survey was carried out on a thicker based roofing material than we use in NZ Roof thickness The roof sheeting commonly used in Australia is 42mm 48mm and the most common roof sheeting used in NZ is 40mm To a layman 40mm may seem thick it s about the same thickness as a sheet of A4 paper you put in your printer All height safety products or lifting devices have to have a safety factor included for height safety anchor points the safety factor is x 2 this is why the anchors have to rate at 12kN 15kN 18kN and 21kN as set out in the standards To most layman 15kN is just a number so the best way to simplify this is by example 15kN The full weight of an average family car and it has to hold that weight for 3min 21kN The full weight of an average family car 6 bags of cement and it has to hold that weight for 3min AS NZS 1891 4 2009 The 1891 4 2009 standard is selection use and maintenance it is not an anchor testing standard Section 1 5 Performance Requirements This standard does not include product performance requirements for height safety equipment Compliance to this standard of any such equipment cannot be claimed Performance requirements with which items of equipment dealt within this standard shell comply are specified in AS NZS 1891 parts 1 2 and 3 AS NZS 5532 2013 6 3 2 dynamic testing procedures of AS NZS 5532 2013 Manufacturing requirements for single point anchor device used for harness based work at height NB Anchors not certified to this standard should not be used Dynamic Testing Criteria Anchor rating kN Rigid mass Free fall distance mm 12 100 600 15 100 2000 50 18 150 600 21 150 2000 50 Video of drop test Click on PDF Absorbing The Load The test shows that by using a low grade mild steel for the Safetor anchor stem and allowing it to bend the stem of the anchor is able to absorb most of the force loading from the attachment point on the structure Test in Slow Motion Watching the 15kN 21kN drop test in slow motion on the video clearly shows the amount of force placed on the anchor mounting plate at the point of attachment if a fall were to happen If the anchor were to be manufactured out of a higher grade or tensile steel the force on the mounting plate at the point of attachment would have been much greater causing the timber to fail Cold Temperature Some steel becomes more brittle in colder temperatures and that changes things
