sharing energy with others outside our immediate family We have a choice whether we want to get bogged down with negative energy or thrive around positive energy I feel privileged to be part of the 2014 Kellogg Rural Leaders programme run by Lincoln University The benefits of the programme are far reaching none more so than the experience of working and socialising alongside positive energetic and fun people Positive networking really is a critical element of success and can be obtained from anywhere including sports industry groups or even forming your own networking group with others looking for motivation and sharing ideas The great thing with networking outside farming is that people don t really want to hear about your negative problems and if they do maybe it is the wrong group to be involved in The other benefit is people outside farming see things in a different light Recently I was discussing my week with a fellow Kellogger in particular how farmers are feeling under pressure during the dry summer My friend questioned why it is a problem given summer comes every year so surely everyone is prepared for it which is a refreshing way to look at it Every business has pressures and challenges and every business has good times and opportunity the key is to be positive and be able to share this with others and share support when it is needed Ian Share this Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Like this Like Loading Posted in Uncategorized Leave a comment Never Give Up On Your Dreams Posted on September 30 2013 by ianhandcock In September this year I had the honour of attending the boat launching of client and good friend Wallace Baker a Dairy farmer from Turua near Thames NZ A gathering of 50 odd family and supporters watched as milk from his Dairy farm was poured symbolically over the bow of White Gold as it was christened But this is not a story about a farmer buying a boat it is a story about a 14 yr old boy who had a dream 52 years ago That dream was to sail around the world Wallace told the story of how as a young boy back in the 1950 s he found a piece of wood that had some depth to it used an old hand saw and hack saw to give the wood some shape and smoothed the curves with a rasp and sandpaper to form the hull of a boat He found some iron and shaped some small sails attached them to some dowling that he had fitted as a mast to finish his sailboat When he was finished he spent hours sailing boats with his brother in an old square water trough by the milking shed while his father milked the herd of cows Achieving dreams comes at a cost and Wallace reflected on forcing himself out of bed on cold mornings to milk cows when his body wanted to remain between the sheets in

really try hard to convince someone to milk your cows they will hardly be passionate about it nor a long term prospect Stop the want want want Start the we have this if you want some you will have to work for it Name me a sports team that has won a championship title without having a champion culture 2 Focus on your business Good work environments will have good staff and good productivity Everyone s idea of a good environment is different that is the beauty of life There are some great innovative ways to play with your business structure to get better results 3 Agriculture needs equity and the industry needs farmers to return to the days where they gave good people a leg up The greatest future opportunity now lies not in 50 50 sharemilking but in equity partnerships with trustworthy people with great values that you can work with 4 Be a Role model Become more balanced in your own life because what you say and do around others shows your true colours People aren t fools you cannot ask for something but be the opposite 5 Take on a coach mentor If you want to get on top and stay on top you need someone to help you get out of the valleys and up onto the peaks The All Blacks are the best rugby team in the world with some of the best players in the world but to stay there they need a coach As with anything the 10 80 10 rule applies In Agriculture there are a 10 of great people working to showcase the opportunities agriculture has for future generations 80 are happy to jump on the wagon but will not put their hand up to help and the bottom 10
