enveloped by dense rainforest Much of the gravel road into the basin which is part of Kahurangi National Park is narrow and winding but can easily be undertaken by 2WD vehicles Most spectacular is the Oparara Arch 43m high and spanning 219m across the river which is reached after a 25 minute walk on a good track through the moss covered rainforest A relatively newer track gets you to Moria Gate Arch smaller in size but arguably even more picturesque The highly fragile Honeycomb cave system first explored in 1980 is accessible only with a Oparara Valley Trust guide and contains the remains of some 50 species including the extinct moa and New Zealand eagle Areas that can be explored without a guide are the Box Canyon and Crazy Paving Caves A good torch is essential There are guided walks and kayaking into the Oparara Arch and Cave and the Honeycomb Hill Caves from Karamea You feel like you have entered another world when you visit it is beauty born of a million years of isolation It is beautiful a lot of great walks in a rain forest or visit crazy paving caves and check out the cave spiders and

leads to viewing platforms directly overlooking the colony Although this is a year round colony the best time to view is October to March when the BIG BULL SEALS return to mate and the pups are at their most playful The Tauranga Bay Seal Colony Walk is an excellent walking track leading to viewing platforms overlooking a large seal colony Depending on the season anything from 20 to 200 NZ fur seals dot the rocks and pups are born from late November to early December This makes for a pretty loud and boisterous gathering The track allows wheelchair access and is an easy 10 minute walk from the Tauranga Bay Carpark 16 kms from Westport Interpretive panels at the platforms provide information on the activity in the colony and the seals breeding cycle They also showcase historical information about the sealing industry that once existed in New Zealand Or if you ve got some surfing enthusiasts in your group some of the best surfing on the Coast is right here at the café end of Tauranga Bay The café used to be the Surf Club note the old photos on the wall Tauranga Bay carpark has picnic tables great toilet
