    Office Christchurch Office News Events Emailed HTML Newsletters Industrial September 2013 Industrial July 2013 Energy August 2013 Energy June 2013 Rack August 2013 CyberPower Special Trade Shows Events Newsletters PowerlineNZ ControlTorqueNZ TradeFliersNZ Document Library Video Archive Transmission Line Hardware Contract NIGUP 400kV Initially operated at 220kV the New Zealand NIGUP Transmission line will be designed and constructed for 400kV operation and built as double circuit New Zealand s electrical transmission infrastructure continues to undergo a period of sustained investment to enhance its security and performance In 2008 owner and operator of New Zealand s National Grid Transpower NZ Ltd created an Alliance relationship with United Group and Balfour Beatty called the Transpower Alliance The Alliance has been created to deliver the North Island Grid Upgrade NIGUP project design supply and construction of a 400kV capable 3 phase 50Hz AC transmission line approximately 186km long The line runs from the central north island Whakamaru North Substation to the Brownhill switching station approximately 9km south of Otahuhu Auckland although the Alliance s scope excludes the actual substation works Initially operated at 220kV the NIGUP Transmission line will be designed and constructed for 400kV operation and built as double circuit Each phase of each circuit is configured in a triple conductor bundle using Sulfur all aluminium conductor AAAC An OPGW earthwire and Wolf ACSR earthwire will run atop the steel lattice tower line with stringing to begin early 2011 Partnership offers design manufacture supply For the NIGUP project Electropar formed a partnership with Salvi Co SpA Italy to meet the projects transmission line hardware requirements The Electropar Salvi scope includes design manufacture and supply of all fittings and hardware for the tension suspension and jumper phase conductors all spacer dampers and stockbridge vibration dampers and all OPGW and earthwire fittings and assemblies Electropar

    Pacific PLP Australia PLP China PLP Indonesia PLP Malaysia PLP Thailand PLP New Zealand Support Contact Contact Us Auckland Office Wellington Office Christchurch Office News Events Emailed HTML Newsletters Industrial September 2013 Industrial July 2013 Energy August 2013 Energy June 2013 Rack August 2013 CyberPower Special Trade Shows Events Newsletters PowerlineNZ ControlTorqueNZ TradeFliersNZ Document Library Video Archive Western 500kV Development New South Wales Transmission Service Provider TNSP TransGrid has continued to invest heavily in development of its 500 330kV Substation Assets over 2007 2008 2009 Early in 2007 United Group Infrastructure were awarded an important Design and Construct contract to build four large 500 330kV substations at the Bayswater Mt Piper Bannaby and Wollar sites This capital works project scope known as the Western 500kV Development is one of the largest ever seen in Australia and is a combination of augmenting existing 330kV stations and construction of new Greenfield s 500 330kV substation sites Identical primary scopes In turn United Group Infrastructure awarded Electropar an initial contract for all of the 500 330kV tubular bus strung bus and interplant equipment conductor fittings for Bayswater and Mt Piper in June 2007 Identical primary scopes for Bannaby and Wollar were then awarded by United Group Infrastructure to Electropar in 2008 Accredited high current lab Not only have these four projects been some of the largest ever completed by United Group Infrastructure and Electropar they have also been some of the most technically complex A large number of new components and assembly s have been developed for the works and to substantiate their performance RIV testing at CSIRO in Sydney and electrical type testing to IEC 61284 at Electropar s independently accredited high current lab has been completed Engineering best practice Other components and assembly s used at Bayswater Mt Piper Bannaby and

    Asia Pacific PLP Australia PLP China PLP Indonesia PLP Malaysia PLP Thailand PLP New Zealand Support Contact Contact Us Auckland Office Wellington Office Christchurch Office News Events Emailed HTML Newsletters Industrial September 2013 Industrial July 2013 Energy August 2013 Energy June 2013 Rack August 2013 CyberPower Special Trade Shows Events Newsletters PowerlineNZ ControlTorqueNZ TradeFliersNZ Document Library Video Archive IMPLOSIVE CONNECTORS For Tactical Upgrades of Transmission Lines Part of the challenge in increasing the ampacity of these circuits was to rebuild them so that they could be operated at higher temperatures while maintaining safe electrical clearances The summer of 2005 2006 has seen some of the largest scale transmission line maintenance works take place on Transpower NZ Ltd s 220kV asset Responding to the need to increase the capacity of existing transmission lines Transpower awarded a joint venture between Electrix Ltd and Transfield Services Ltd with the job of completing tactical upgrades of high voltage circuits all over the South Island of New Zealand TACTICAL UPGRADES Originally built in Goat 400mm2 and Zebra 485mm2 ACSR in the 1950 s and 1960 s part of the challenge in increasing the ampacity of these circuits was to rebuild them so that they could be operated at higher temperatures while maintaining safe electrical clearances Backed by Transfield and Electrix the technology chosen to complete the tactical upgrades was implosive connectors over the traditional compression connectors Implosive connectors offered a number of advantages for the project including Fastest speed of install minimised outage duration Increased asset uptime availability for system operations No conductor cleaning required Consistent high quality installation every fitting Use of implosive connectors was supported by Electropar with testing completed in Electropar s IANZ accredited IANZ in NZ is similar to NATA in Australia high current test laboratory Over an almost 12 month

    that phase to phase insulation in transmission substations is not just technically possible it is the future of design for delivering the best value Transmission Assets The commercial argument was based on the reduction in quantity of foundations civil works in addition to shrinking the footprint of the air insulated switchyard Financial analysis indicated that the cost saving in civil works electrical equipment and real estate was substantial enough to warrant the investment in a development programme Verify Critical Load Points Before practical test could be considered though the first milestone was to have the fundamental design elements examined and ratified by an independent and suitably qualified consultant The analysis centred around the mechanical withstand of the system and was completed by Beca Carter Auckland in the third quarter of 2008 The Beca work was then peer reviewed by Maunsell prior to Christmas 2008 Subsequently all parties agreed that the mathematical calculations indicated the system would withstand the short circuit forces generated under Transpower s worst case fault scenario However to provide an additional level of confidence a finite element analysis FEA was completed to further verify critical load points within the system Installed In A Real Substation As a result of gaining agreement that technically the High Voltage Underhung Busbar System was feasible Stage 2 of the project has been completed Practical short circuit testing of the busbar system The testing took place at Powertech Lab s in Vancouver Canada http www powertechlabs com in June 2009 after a global search for laboratory s with capability to complete this challenging scope At Powertech Labs Electropar built a full bay of 220kV see photo utilising Transpower s standard cage type concrete foundations steel support structures post insulators and Electropar s rigid bus flexible conductor fittings so that the performance of
